Internet access is available on public terminals for all users of the Lake Forest Library as of April 1, 1995. Access to Internet is compatible with the library's endorsement of the Library Bill of Rights, the Freedom to Read, and the Freedom to View documents and with its collection development policy and mission statement.

The Internet allows users to connect to networks of resources outside the library. The library has no control over these resources nor does the library have complete knowledge of what is on the Internet. Information on the Internet may be reliable and current or it may be inaccurate, out-of date, or unavailable at times.

The Lake Forest Library is responsible only for information that Library staff has produced and published on the Internet.

Library users access the Internet at their own discretion. Parents and guardians, not the Library or staff, are responsible for the Internet information selected and accessed by their children. Parents should let their child know if there are resources which they do not want him/her to use. Parents may wish to supervise their children's Internet sessions.

The user may not use the Internet for any illegal activity or place any material on the Internet related to any illegal activity. It is the responsibility of the user to respect copyright laws and licensing agreements and to assume responsibility for payment of fees for any fee-based service.

Staff will assist patrons with Internet use as time and resources permit, but cannot offer personal instruction. Formal instruction on Internet may be offered by the library at designated times.

The Lake Forest Library is bound by an agreement with its Internet provider. This agreement prohibits use of personal logins or FTP functions.

Information and resources on the Internet enhance those already held in the library and often go beyond what is locally available. Users are encouraged to take advantage of the Internet and to exercise good judgment and discretion in their use of it. Current books on the Internet are available in the library's material collection.

The Lake Forest Library administration will develop rules and procedures necessary to insure the fair and reasonable use of Internet, including rules limiting the type of access and the manner of access.

Be aware that the Internet is not a secure medium and third parties may be able to obtain information about users' activities. Information collected during the use of the Internet and the Local Area Network is deleted as deemed appropriate by our LAN vendor, Computer View, Inc. The Library respects the confidentiality of those using electronic resources and will release library records only as required by law.
