LAKE FOREST LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
MEETING
Tuesday, April 14, 2009
MINUTES
Present: President Thornburgh; Trustees Barnett, Dettling, Garrett, Hull, Miserendino, Pierson, and Young ; Administrative Librarian Grabbe; and Administrative Assistant Grasmick.
Absent: Trustee Westropp; Youth Liaison, Amanda Levy .
President Thornburgh called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
There were some corrections to the minutes of the March 10 meeting.
Under Services, 2 nd line, should read Deer Path Middle School
Under Miscellaneous add “the” before Per Capita Grant
Under Friends, 2 nd paragraph, change Diane to Diana
Change header date on 2 nd page to March 10, 2009
The minutes were approved as corrected.
Administrative Librarian's Report:
Maintenance: The Children’s Library reopened on April 1. A few finishing touches, such as the murals over the circulation desk and by the elevator, remain. The stairwell murals were installed on April 10. Carpeting on the stairs will be completed today.
Equipment: The closed-circuit television ( CCTV) has been installed and is active. There are 18 cameras located in public areas, including the back landing. A demo will be held once staff members have been trained.
Personnel: Two new employees have joined the adult circulation department, Lenore Arvia and Donna O’Connor.
Services: The library sponsored two LEAD programs this spring, one on April 13 and one scheduled for April 23.
Girl Scout Troop 2698 has placed a box for athletic shoe recycling in our front lobby.
Summer reading sign up begins on June 1. One of the children’s prizes is a hand-powered LED flashlight. The teen grand prize is an iPod nano. The Adult grand prize is a Sony Reader.
Night Owl, after hours reference service by phone, will cease operation on June 30, 2009. Online reference service and email has caused usage to decline.
Miscellaneous: Invitations to the City’s Board and Commission dinner have gone out. Trustees may RSVP on their own for the May 8 th event.
The Lake Forest Preservation Foundation is placing a 12” by 18” sign on our front lawn to designate the library as a previous historic preservation award recipient. The sign will be posted from the last week in April through the second week in May.
Committee Reports:
Services: No report.
Long Range Planning: No report. The committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. on May 12, 2009.
Finance: No report.
NSLS: Trustee Hull forwarded information on requesting federal economic stimulus funds to Mrs. Grabbe. She submitted the parking lot resurfacing and window renovations to the Illinois State Library.
Friends: There was a board meeting on March 21st. They worked on planning for the Children’s Book Sale on June 4, 5 & 6 and also on publicity for the change of location for the fall sale.
The Annual Program will be held on Wednesday, April 22nd at 1:00 p.m. in the auditorium at Gorton Community Center. Barbara Rinella will recreate the role of the Empress from the book The Commoner by John Burnham Schwartz.
Old Business: The nominating committee, Trustees Garrett, Hull, and Miserendino, will meet at 7:00 p.m. on May 5 th. They will present their slate of officers at the May meeting.
Trustee Barnett asked about capital expenses being high this year. Mrs. Grabbe stated that some projects were budgeted for previous years, but were not completed until this year.
New Business: Trustee Young asked about items that were moved from the locked cases. Mrs. Grabbe stated that items that were not part of local history and were not held by any other library were offered to Lake Forest College. Those not taken by the college were given to the Friends for the book sale.
The next Board meeting will be on Tuesday, May 12, 2009.
Opportunity for the public to address the Board: no one addressed the Board.
President Thornburgh adjourned the meeting at 7:50 p.m. for the Board to go into Executive Session to discuss a personnel matter.
Following the Executive Session, President Thornburgh called the meeting to order at 8:10 p.m.
Trustee Barnett moved that the meeting be adjourned. Trustee Young seconded. Motion carried.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:11 p.m.

Executive Session, April 14, 2009
MINUTES
The Board members reviewed the job performance of the Administrative Librarian for the past year. A salary increase was recommended and approved for the coming year.
