LAKE FOREST LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
MEETING
Tuesday, January 9, 2007
MINUTES
Present: President Duncan; Trustees Bacon, Barnett, Garrett, Miserendino, Plandowski, Thornburgh, and Young; Administrative Librarian Grabbe; and Administrative Assistant Grasmick.
Absent: Trustee Pierson.
President Duncan called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
There were no changes or corrections to the minutes of the December 12 meeting. The minutes were approved as mailed.
President Duncan welcomed new trustee, Bruce Barnett. Trustee Barnett will complete the term vacated by Ann Therese Palmer. He has a background in law/finance and is a rare book dealer. The trustees introduced themselves.
Administrative Librarian's Report:
Personnel: Former trustee, Steve Galovich, died December 14 th. The board will send a memorial contribution.
Services: We are still awaiting delivery of the wireless server, but all the PR for the wireless launch is ready to go.
Miscellaneous: The library has received a number of donations recently:
$20,000 from the Buchanan Family Foundation; $500 from the Dick Family Foundation; and $250 from L. Keith Reed
Trustee Young asked if the library had procedures in place to fundraise within Lake Forest. Mrs. Grabbe stated that the Friends handle fundraising and that most community-based organizations have a need-based distribution system. We do not usually qualify under those guidelines.
Committee Reports:
Services: No report.
Long Range Plan: No report.
Finance: A meeting was set for 6:30 p.m. on February 13 th to discuss the FY08 budget.
NSLS: Trustee Plandowski distributed information about the 2007 NSLS Legislative Breakfast, which is scheduled for Monday, February 19, from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Arboretum Club, 401 W. Half Day Rd. (Rt. 22), Buffalo Grove. Trustees interested in attending should notify Mrs. Grabbe. It is a good way for libraries to meet with their legislators.
Friends : The winter program featuring dramatist Megan Wells performing Helen’s Troy will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at Gorton Community Center.
Old Business : Art Miller at Lake Forest College produced an informative note card using an image from one of our books housed in their special archives collection. Mrs. Grabbe passed an example and has asked for a small supply for the library.
New Business: The next meeting will be Tuesday, February 13, 2007.
Trustee Barnett asked for an explanation of our funds on hand—how they are earmarked and if there is a target objective amount. Mrs. Grabbe stated that there is a 15% reserve, a technology reserve, and a capital improvements reserve which will be used to upgrade the children’s department. The tax cap is causing a discrepancy between revenue increases and personnel costs. Slowing growth will not allow revenues to keep pace with rising expenses.
Opportunity for the public to address the Board: No one addressed the Board.
Trustee Young moved that the meeting be adjourned; Trustee Plandwoski seconded. Motion carried.
There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:01 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Robert Thornburgh
Secretary
