Library Board Meeting
Tuesday, May 8, 2007
MINUTES
Present: President Duncan; Trustees Bacon, Barnett, Miserendino, Pierson, Plandowski, Thornburgh, and Young; Administrative Librarian Grabbe; and Administrative Assistant Grasmick.
Absent: Trustee Garrett.
President Duncan called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
There were no changes or corrections to the minutes of the April 10 meeting. The minutes were approved as mailed.
Librarian’s Report:
Maintenance: The gutter heating cables have been replaced. Tuck-pointing of the courtyard walls is scheduled to begin on 5/14. Caulking and painting of exterior window frames is scheduled to begin on 5/21.
Personnel: Pat Gundrum retired from the Technical Services department effective May 2, 2007.
Services: The library automation software will be updated during the night of 5/14. We expect the system to be ready to go by the time the library opens on 5/15.
This year’s Teen Reading prize is a $200.00 gift certificate to iTunes.
MySpace and the Illinois Library Association joined together to provide funding to print and distribute a series of Internet Safety Bookmarks. 400 of each of the three bookmarks will be made available to every public library in Illinois. These bookmarks are designed as a series that will help educate youth and parents to make safe and informed decisions online. Each bookmark is aimed at a specific audience including kids, teens, and parents. The three Internet Safety Bookmarks are: Dealing with Cyberbullies: Tips for Kids; Safe Blogging: Tips for Teens; and Social Networking: Tips for Parents.
Miscellaneous: Promotional materials for upcoming programs were displayed.
The Preservation Foundation’s annual meeting and awards program was held on 4/29. The library was presented with a rehabilitation award. Mrs. Grabbe and President Duncan were in attendance.
The City’s Board and Commission dinner was held on May 5 th at the Lake Forest Club. It was a nice evening which included video “tours” of various City locations. The library was one of the featured sites.
This is the 40th Anniversary of the Lake Forest Children’s Library “Apple Tree Children” sculpture. The wood and bronze piece by Sylvia Shaw Judson was installed in 1967.
Committee Reports:
Services: No report.
Long Range Planning: No report.
Finance: No report.
NSLS: The trustee training and certification program has been approved. Information about the program may be found at: http://www.nsls.info/about/board/trustees/TTCbrochure050107.pdf
Friends: Barbara Rinella nearly filled the 343 seat auditorium at Gorton Community Center for her presentation at the annual program.
Old Business: May 14 is HB 1727 day of unity—the day to contact representatives and voice opinions about the bill.
New Business: The non-resident library fee card program was discussed.
Trustee Young moved to approve participation in the non-resident fee card program. Trustee Plandowski seconded. Motion carried.
Expenditures of Per Capita Grant funds were discussed.
Trustee Young moved to spend Per Capita Grant funds on electronic resources. Trustee Plandowski seconded. Motion carried.
President Duncan appointed trustees Pierson, Thornburgh, and Young to serve as the nominating committee for FY07/08 board officers.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, June 12, 2007.
Opportunity for the public to address the Board: no one addressed the Board.
Trustee Pierson moved that the meeting be adjourned. Trustee Bacon seconded. Motion carried.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:48 p.m.
