Placing Holds on "On Shelf" Items

Important: If an item is available on our shelves at Lake Forest, for faster service please call 847.234.0636 to place a hold.

Placing a hold online in the catalog does not mean your hold is immediately available for pickup at the Library.

For items that are not currently on our shelves, or that are coming from other libraries, we will let you know when the item is available for pickup.

Holds on NEW Movies

When viewing a new movie in the catalog, you have the option to place it on hold. Please note that your hold doesn't actually go into effect until AFTER the movie has been in the Library's collection for two months, however.

So although you’ll see the hold in My Account, it may take longer than you expect to be notified that the item is available and waiting for you. The only way to borrow new movies sooner is to come into the Library and find the movie on the shelf.

To Place an Item on Hold, You Can Either:

  • Call us at 847.810.4610 and we'll place a hold on it for you

  • Place the item on hold yourself by visiting My Account (directions follow)

Directions for placing holds online through My Account

  1. Browse to the item in the Catalog

  2. Click the "Place Hold" button

  3. Enter your barcode number and password
    (If you haven't changed your password, the default password is patron)

  4. Select your Pickup Library and click the "Place Hold(s)" button

  5. A window will appear, indicating that your hold was successfully placed. If you have any issues, please call us at 847.810.4610.

What's my password?

If you haven't changed the password for yourlibrary account, the default password is (in all caps):

patron

If you got your Library card after April 2018, your default password may be the last 4 digits of your phone number.

Renewing Items

Did you only make it halfway through the book? We've been there.

Fortunately, it's possible to renew items, with just a few exceptions:

  • You can't renew movies that have been in the Library collection less than two months.
  • You also can't renew Rental Books, Launchpads, or video games.
  • If there are holds on an item, or if the renewal limit has been reached, you can't renew it.

It is possible to renew an item that is overdue; the renewal won't cancel the overdue fine, but it will keep the fine from growing.

To Renew an Item, You Can Either:

  • Call us at 847.810.4610 and we'll renew it for you

  • Renew the item yourself by visiting My Account (directions follow)

Directions for renewing online through My Account

  1. Go to My Account.

  2. Enter your barcode number and password
    (If you haven't changed your password, it’s most likely patron, the default password)

  3. Click the Checkouts tab

  4. Select the item(s) you would like to renew

  5. Click the Renew button

  6. Click the Yes button to confirm your renewal. If you have any issues, please call us at 847.810.4610.
