Who to contact

If you are feeling sick, please first discuss your symptoms with your doctor, who can refer you to a testing site. If you do not have a primary care provider, please contact the Lake County Health Department by calling 847.377.8800. Find a testing site near you.

For immediate assistance in finding food, shelter, rent, or utility assistance, contact 211 to speak with someone who knows Lake County organizations and resources:

  • Call 211
  • Text your zip code to 898211
  • To receive general COVID19 information via text, text "COVID19" to 211211.

If you would like to seek counseling:

  • To “Call for Calm”, text “TALK” or "HABLAR" (for Spanish) to 552020 to be connected with someone who can lend you emotional support while experiencing stress related to COVID19, free of charge. Sponsored by the Illinois Department of Human Services, Mental Health Division.
  • To speak anonymously with a counselor or a certified addiction counselor, call the Lake County Crisis Care hotline at 847.377.8088. Counselors are available 24/7.

If you or someone you know are the victim of domestic violence, help is available. Visit the National Domestic Violence Hotline website or call the hotline anytime 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233.

Suicide Prevention:

The Lake County Health Department’s Crisis Care Program offers a free, confidential hotline for anyone experiencing a mental crisis or substance use issue at (847) 377-8088. Counselors are also available in person at 3002 Grand Avenue, Waukegan, Illinois. People wishing to speak with a counselor can call or walk in, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is an important resource for those who are having thoughts of suicide or people concerned for a loved one. The Lifeline provides free, 24/7 confidential support at 1-800-273-8255. The Lifeline is committed to advancing suicide prevention, along with improving crisis services.

Waukegan Testing Facility

A state-operated community based testing site moved to a new location on June 4 in Waukegan at 102 W. Water St. It will be open seven days a week between 8 am to 4 pm, or until 750 tests have been completed in a single day. Tests are administered by the Illinois National Gaurd. Results come back between 4-7 days. Tests are free. For more information, visit lakecountyil.gov/4435.

Who can be tested at the Waukegan facility:

  • All individuals with symptoms
  • People in the following groups with or without symptoms:
    • Individuals exposed to a confirmed COVID19 case
    • Individuals with compromised immune systems and/or chronic medical conditions
    • Healthcare workers
    • First
    • Employees of correctional facilities
    • Employees who support critical infrastructure (grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, gas stations, public utilities, factories, childcare and sanitation)
    • Individuals slated to receive elective surgery within 72 hours

Definition of Symptoms:

  • Fever, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell

Blood Donors Needed

Save lives by donating blood and help fill the nationwide shortage. Donate via Vitalant.org (877-258-4825) or schedule an appointment with American Red Cross at redcrossblood.org.

 

Respiratory Illness Clinic

 

Lake County recently opened a Respiratory Illness Clinic for patients with symptoms of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses, located at the North Chicago Health Center, 2215 14th St, North Chicago. Appointments are required and can be scheduled through the Patient Access Center at 847.377.8800.

What you can do

You can help prevent the spread of viruses and respiratory diseases like COVID-19 by:

  • Washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Cleaning and disinfecting frequently-touched objects and surfaces
  • Staying home when you are sick, except to get medical care
  • Covering your coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throwing the tissue in the trash
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Avoiding close contact with people who are sick
