Position Summary

Non-exempt

Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, ensures that the library building is in good operating order, library facility needs are met, and library building policies and procedures are followed closely. Routinely interact with the public and other library departments to deliver outstanding library services to further the library’s mission to inspire lifelong learning, promote the free and respectful exchange of ideas, and build community. This position has no supervisory role.

(95%) Responsibilities and Duties (as Directed by the Facilities Manager)

  • Maintain the library building and grounds by ensuring their cleanliness, appearance, and smooth operations in all weather conditions  
  • Perform light maintenance to include plumbing, electrical, paint/patch drywall and HVAC maintenance and repairs
  • Respond to immediate and urgent building issues
  • Take immediate and corrective action during and after operational hours
  • Execute meeting and program set up requests
  • Inspect, assemble (if necessary), and deliver incoming equipment and furnishings
  • Deliver packages and materials in a timely manner to appropriate library staff and departments
  • Regularly walk the library to maintain an appropriate environment for patrons and staff, including but not limited to offering directional assistance to patrons and checking in with department staff
  • Secures premises and personnel by patrolling property; monitoring surveillance equipment; inspecting access points, permitting entry (vendors, contractors etc. at dock entrance).  
  • Address disruptive behavior by patrons according to the guidelines in the security procedures manual.
  • Escort contractors and vendors to various areas of the library to perform work/repairs requested

  • Attend consortium, professional, committee, and library meetings and conferences, continuing education, and training sessions, as requested
  • Serve on library committees, as requested
  • Represent the library at community events, activities, and meetings, as requested

  • Ability to exercise initiative in problem solving and refer questionable situations to Facilities Manger

  • Ability to deal with frequent interruptions in a busy public service environment
  • Must wear uniform provided by the library while working  
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in English
  • Ability to understand oral and written directions in English  
  • Competent in the use of the library's two-way radio security system
  • Understand and use technology systems and equipment as outlined in the Lake Forest Library Technology Core Competencies in the areas of hardware, operating system and file management, software applications, and internet

Education and Other Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years facilities experience
  • Knowledge of custodial standards and safety practices
  • Ability to operate and instruct others in the use of all equipment necessary to perform duties of the position, including cleaning equipment, hand and power tools, snow removal equipment, power lifts and grounds equipment
  • Familiarity with all building systems located within the library
  • Extensive knowledge of and ability to use Internet search engines, word processing software, email, BS&A payroll system, Microsoft Office Suite, Windows operating systems, and other applications in the Lake Forest Library Technology Core Competency Program
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license, access to a vehicle, and current automobile insurance

Physical Requirements

  • Maintain a level of physical fitness required for the position
  • Move, lift, carry, and put away items, weighing up to 75 pounds, sometimes repetitively
  • Ability to climb ladders and operate lifts to complete inspections and repairs
  • Perform strenuous physical activities that require strength and coordination
  • Tolerate exposures to equipment noise, fumes, allergens, cleaning devices, particulates, and fluctuating temperature  
  • Work in normal and extreme outside weather conditions
  • Move in and around office equipment, including tights spaces
  • Remain in a standing, walking, and bending position for extended periods of time
