Brief Job Description:

The Lake Forest Library, Lake Forest, IL, is seeking an energetic, creative, and service-oriented Youth Librarian to work with teens and tweens (young adults). This position is responsible for collection development and the planning and overseeing of programming for young adults within the Library and throughout the community.

Applicants should have 4+ years experience in a public library setting that includes collection development work and experience developing and delivering innovative and creative STEAM and technology (e.g., coding, robotics) programs, book groups, summer reading, and Library-wide programs.

Position Details

Full Time, 37 hours per week, including evenings and weekends.

Salary: Starting at $22/hour, DOQ. Includes health benefits, vacation, holiday, and sick leave benefits.

Duties

  • Plans, presents, and supervises programs for young adults. Supervises other staff presenting programs and events.
  • Develops, selects, and maintains library collection of books, magazines, AV, and other materials as assigned.
  • Coordinates with marketing department to generate publicity and displays young adult programs and collection.
  • Acts as a reader's advisor and reference librarian for children's and adult services department.
  • Assists patrons of all ages in the full use of the Library and its digital and print resources.
  • Conducts library orientation, tours, and visits to the Library.
  • Creates bibliographies, displays, and other publicity materials relating to young adults.
  • Maintains a working relationship with teachers, librarians, and other staff within area schools and community agencies/organizations serving young adults.
  • Establishes and maintains effective work relationships with co-workers, staff of other libraries, and the general public.
  • Cooperates as a team member with the library staff in performing any duty essential to the achievement of efficient library operations.
  • Implements emerging trends in education and youth development that have the capacity to inform and direct library collections, services and programs for youths.
  • Engages in continuing professional development activities, relevant to library services for young adults.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • MLS from an ALA accredited graduate school.
  • Four years' experience working with youth and/or teens and knowledge of young adult literature and services.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer and information technology skills.
  • Knowledge of the theories, principles and techniques of librarianship.
  • Ability to translate patron needs and interests into effective library services and programs.
  • Ability to work independently to develop, plan, and organize programs and services for young adults.
  • Ability to relate to co-workers in a positive and responsive manner.
  • Ability to exercise tact, leadership and judgment and coordinate, plan and administer for quality library service to the community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
  • Must have valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
