Kristin Ashley Artist Statement

I am a fine artist, graphic designer, photographer, and award-winning poet. I’m also a Technology Instructor here at Lake Forest Library. All of my artwork, in the genres of photography and paintings, are meant to reflect the love of nature that I feel. My hope is that my artwork inspires the viewer to appreciate and preserve our natural environment.

I chose to paint nature scenes and wildlife on feathers because the natural, ethereal quality of feathers becomes the perfect canvas for embodying the imaginative and intuitive qualities of the spirits of nature. The figures and landscapes I paint are meant to have a symbolic and otherworldly presence.

Feathers are a symbol of transcendence. I also like the historical connotation of the feather as a quill, as a writing or drawing instrument. I often use metallic oil paint to symbolize the otherworldly nature of wildlife: silver fur, golden feathers, bronze antlers. Mythological creatures appear alongside commonly beheld animals such as the raven, deer, fox, and horse. A horse with wings, for example, embodies both the strength and power of the horse and the spiritual, mystical qualities of a bird in flight. As you view these feathers, it is my hope that these feather paintings will uplift and inspire you.
