Kathy's Korner - December New Fiction for Grades 3-8

One Smart Sheep by Gary Schmidt.  Wilson is a curious sheep, and after he foolishly climbs into the back of a piano movers' truck, he ends up alone in the big city, far from the farm.  Gr 1-4. 

Book Buddies: Ivy Lost and Found by Cynthia Lord.  Ivy was Anne the librarian's doll when she was a young girl. But now Ivy has moved to Anne's library to be its newest Book Buddy--a toy that can be checked out just like a book.  Gr 2-4. 

The Wind Riders: Rescue on Turtle Beach by Jen Marlin.  The first book in an illustrated chapter book series about Max and Sofia’s adventures tackling real world ecological problems.  Moments after finding an abandoned sailboat hidden in a beachfront cove, Max and Sofia are magically sailed away to Hawaii where they learn the plight of some baby sea turtles disoriented by the excessive light of nearby hotels.  Good choice for fans of the Magic Tree House focusing on environmental activism.  Gr 1-4. 

Mindy Kim and the Yummy Seaweed Business by Lyla Lee.  Just like all kids, Mindy Kim wants to fit in at her new school. But her traditional Korean lunch and snacks aren’t helping, until her new friend volunteers to try some. Before you know it, Mindy is trading snacks with all the other kids. Fun series that combines Korean culture with the universal issues all school children deal with. Gr 1-4. 

The Shadow Prince by David Durham.  In this middle grade solarpunk novel set in an alternate Egyptian universe, twelve-year-old Ash must compete and survive to become the shadow-and protector-of the prince.  For fans of the Percy Jackson Lightning Thief Books.  Gr 4-7. 

Faceless by Kathryn Lasky.  WWII spy drama.  Teen-age sisters are members of Tabula Rasa, a spy clan that can be unrememberable.  Gr 5-8. 

Out of My Heart by Sharon Draper.  A sequel long in the making to the ever popular Out of My Mind, a story of a young girl with cerebral palsy and her struggles to literally find her voice.  Now, Melody desires a summer at camp like other kids and convinces her mom to let her spend the night away from home for the first time.  Gr 4-8. 

Room to Dream by Kelly Yang.  The story of immigrant Mia Tang and the Calivista Motel continues as urban development both helps and hurts the motel, and Mia goes back on a visit to the China she left only a few years ago.  Gr 4-7. 

The Bookshop of Dust and Dreams by Mindy Thompson.  It's 1944 Sutton, NY, and Poppy's family owns and runs, Rhyme and Reason, a magical bookshop that caters to people from all different places and time periods.  Gr 3-7. 

The Swallows’ Flight by Hilary McKay The lives of two sets of best friends, Kate and Ruby in England and Erik and Hans in Germany, as well as a stray dog in London are brought together in unexpected ways during World War II.  Gr 3-7. 

The Troubled Girls of Dragomir Academy by Anne Ursu.  After interfering in her muggle brother’s magic test, Marya Lupu is sent to Dragomir Academy, a school for wayward girls--but a school where she finds friendship and ultimately discovers her own talents.  Gr 5-8. 

Any Day with You by Mae Respicio.  Kaia, who enjoys visiting the beach with her family, and creating movie make-up effects, makes a film with her friends to win a contest and hopefully prevent her beloved great-grandfather from moving back to the Philippines.  Gr 3-7. 

Crime and Carpetbags by Julie Berry.  Sequel to Wishes and Wellingtons. Lively fantasy adventure with (djinni) genies, wishes, and flying magic carpet bags!  Gr 5-8. 

Stuntboy, in the Meantime by Jason Reynolds/Raul the Third.  Heavily illustrated adventures of the greatest superhero you’ve never heard of.  Gr 3-7. 

The Crown Heist by Deron Hicks Another in the Lost Art mystery series, set this time in London.  Gr 4-7. 

 

 GRAPHIC NOVELS 

Bad Sister by Charise Harper.  Charise is energetic, helpful, a model pet owner, and full of inventions. But she's also a bad sister. When she goes too far and breaks her little brother Daniel's tooth, can she redeem herself?  Gr 3-7. 

A Tale as Tall as Jacob: Misadventures with My Brother by Samantha Edwards.  When Jacob is born, Samantha is excited to have a little brother, but Jacob quickly grows into a loud, chaotic, and seemingly unstoppable force, ultimately diagnosed with ADHD.  As Samantha struggles to understand and survive Jacob's daily shenanigans, shared moments of lighthearted fun remind her of the value of loving your family for who they are.  Gr 3-6. 

Salt Magic by Hope Larson/Rebecca Mock. When Vonceil's older brother, Elber, comes home to their family's Oklahoma farm after serving in World War I, things aren't what she expects.  They no longer share a special closeness.  But when a woman follows Elber from France, magic, mystery and curses turn this into an unforgettable and visually stunning story.  Gr 5-8. 

When Pigs Fly by Rob Harrell.  When a radioactive bat bite gives him powers he never would have dreamed of, Gary decides that he'll use his powers for good and becomes … Batpig!  Gr 2-6.
